Train-the-trainer: A supply and utilization model for the further education of trainers

Pia Schäfer, Susanne Wißhak and Leo van Waveren have developed a joint supply and utilization model as part of a cross-location cooperation within the RPTU University Kaiserslautern-Landau (RPTU). This model deals with the factors influencing the effectiveness of trainers' continuing education measures. It adapts Pia Schäfer and Leo van Waveren's delivery and utilization model for online and face-to-face training for teachers(ANM-LFB) to the train-the-trainer context and at the same time places a strong focus on the transfer of training content into the trainers' professional practice. Among other things, the transfer model by Baldwin and Ford (1988) was used.
The influencing factors are structured into
- external factors: relating to the training measure
- individual factors: concerning the participating trainers
- contextual factors: relating to the participants' working environment
The collaboration to develop the model resulted in a joint publication in which the Generic offer-and-use model for train-the-trainer programs was presented and theoretically derived in the International Journal of Training and Development. The publication is available at: https: //onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/ijtd.12370
This model is suitable for studies on train-the-trainer programs. To this end, empirical studies are to be carried out with the aim of investigating the validity and applicability of the model. In practical application, it can be used to design, evaluate and reflect on the effectiveness of train-the-trainer programs.
