Impulse paper of the Standing Scientific Commission of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs
On January 18, 2024, the impulse paper of the Standing Scientific Commission (SWK) of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs on Large Language Models and their potential in the education system was published. The impulse paper answers questions of the current educational discourse, such as
- How can large language models be used to promote learning?
- What skills are required on the part of students and teachers?
- How are examination formats changing due to Chat GPT and Co.
- What challenges are associated with their use?
The impulse paper first presents large language models (LLM) and their characteristics before highlighting the potential and limitations of LLM tools (e.g. ChatGPT, LLaMA) for teaching and learning. The necessary prerequisites for the competent use of LLM tools are then discussed, such as the necessary technology-related knowledge and the content-related knowledge required to create the prompts. In addition, challenges in dealing with large language models are discussed, including legal aspects, data protection and effects on the examination culture. In the conclusion, a recommendation is made for the considered use of large language models:
"AI can and should support teaching-learning processes, the final decision or assessment and the responsibility for the end product must lie with humans." (SWK 2023, P. 18)
