EU Artificial Intelligence Act

New technologies require new legal frameworks

The EU AI Act was published in July 2024. The new law regulating AI can be summarized in four points:

  • The AI Act classifies AI according to its risk
    • AI systems with unacceptable risks are prohibited
    • AI systems with high risk are heavily regulated
    • AI systems with limited risk must disclose to end users that they are interacting with AI (e.g. chatbots)
    • Low-risk AI systems are unregulated
  • Providers/developers of high-risk AI systems are subject to the most obligations
    • Providers of high-risk AI systems that are used in the EU
  • Users are natural or legal persons who use an AI system professionally
    • In the case of high-risk AI systems, users also have an obligation
    • Scope of application for users in the EU
  • General purpose AI (GPAI)
    • Provision of technical documentation and instructions for use, compliance with copyright law
    • AI systems with systemic risk must perform model assessments and take cybersecurity protection measures
