New technologies require new legal frameworks
The EU AI Act was published in July 2024. The new law regulating AI can be summarized in four points:
- The AI Act classifies AI according to its risk
- AI systems with unacceptable risks are prohibited
- AI systems with high risk are heavily regulated
- AI systems with limited risk must disclose to end users that they are interacting with AI (e.g. chatbots)
- Low-risk AI systems are unregulated
- Providers/developers of high-risk AI systems are subject to the most obligations
- Providers of high-risk AI systems that are used in the EU
- Users are natural or legal persons who use an AI system professionally
- In the case of high-risk AI systems, users also have an obligation
- Scope of application for users in the EU
- General purpose AI (GPAI)
- Provision of technical documentation and instructions for use, compliance with copyright law
- AI systems with systemic risk must perform model assessments and take cybersecurity protection measures
