UNESCO AI competence framework for teachers

Instruct teachers on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the school context

On August 8, 2024, the UNESCO AI Competence Framework for Teachers was published. The aim of the competency framework is to define the necessary knowledge, skills and values that teachers need to master in the age of AI in order to use AI in the school context. UNESCO describes a changed relationship between teachers and learners due to the advent of AI, which has now become a teacher-AI-learner dynamic. Despite these major changes, UNESCO laments the lack of integration of training and further education opportunities for teachers on the subject of AI.

"Few countries have defined these competencies or developed national programs to train teachers in AI, leaving many educators without proper guidance" (UNESCO, 2024).

UNESCO therefore formulates 15 competencies in its AI competence framework for teachers, which cover five dimensions and can be mastered at three levels (acquire, deepen and create):

  • Human-centered thinking
  • Ethics in AI
  • Fundamentals and applications of AI
  • AI pedagogy
  • AI for professional development

UNESCO provides guidelines for the development of national AI competency frameworks and information for teacher training programs. At the same time, the competency framework provides strategies for teachers to build AI skills and apply ethical principles when using AI.

"By 2022, only 7countries had developed AI frameworks pr programs for teachers" (UNESCO, 2024). This data underlines the relevance for the AI literacy framework, which is available at: https: //doi.org/10.54675/ZJTE2084

As an equivalent, UNESCO has also developed an AI competency framework for students.
