UNESCO AI competence framework for pupils

Preparing students to be responsible and creative citizens in the age of AI

On August 8, 2024, the UNESCO AI Competence Framework for Students was published. The aim of the competency framework is to help teachers integrate learning objectives on the use and handling of AI into school curricula in order to prepare students for the responsible and creative use of AI. The competency framework therefore comprises 12 competencies, which are structured into four areas and can be mastered at three levels (understanding, applying and creating):

  • Human-centered mindset
  • Ethics in AI
  • AI techniques and applications
  • AI system design

The UNESCO AI Competence Framework offers teachers support in the form of subject-specific pedagogical methods. It emphasizes the importance of critical judgment towards AI, AI skills for lifelong learning and the inclusive and sustainable design of AI.

"By 2022, only 15 countries had included AI learning objectives in their national curricula" (UNESCO, 2024). This data shows the relevance for the AI competence framework, which is available at: https: //doi.org/10.54675/JKJB9835

As an equivalent, UNESCO has also developed an AI competence framework for teachers.
